The domestic garment industry has, finally, been successful in its attempt to be included in the in the Free Trade Agreement (FTA).

Minister for Foreign Affairs Kaliopate Tavola elaborated, “We tried to dock it to Australia and the USA under the Free Trade Agreement but this was not possible because the agreement does not have the provision to allow for a qualified industrial zone.”

The new policy allows inclusion of qualified industrial zone (QIZ) in the FTA to take advantage of the existing allowances.

The US Government has decided to amend the FTA to include QIZs, soon.

Fiji has further proposed an export capacity building program under inactive Joint Commerce Commission that was being considered and the US had expressed optimistic attitude towards this project.
