Finance Advisor Dr Shoeb Ahmed met with a delegation of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) officials, headed by its President S M Fazlul Hoque yesterday.
BGMEA officials requested Government to grant them emergency bank loans at low interest rate, which would help them pay wages and allowances to labourers before Eid-ul-Azha.
They also urged that two month's salary and Eid bonus have to be given to workers by December end, which is burdening factory owners as they are facing fund shortage due to lagging exports.
Hoque expressed concerns over the possibility of fierce labour unrest if workers don't receive their salaries prior to Eid. To avoid this situation, apparel makers required assistance from banks.
Officials appealed Ahmed for directing Central Bank and other commercial banks to grant low interest loans to factory owners. Sources informed that Shoeb Ahmed, also handling the Commerce Ministry, responded immediately by telling the Commerce Secretary to look into the matter.
