Apparel items and machineries worth several lakhs of rupees were gutted in a major fire which broke out here in a readymade garment unit on Thursday.

The readymade garment unit functioning in a two-storeyed building in Barathi Nagar, Ganapathi, was engulfed in flames, which was detected at around 3 A.M.

The fire was extinguished after several hours with the help of four fire tenders.

Saravanampatti police have registered a case for the same, but suspect electrical short circuit to be the cause of fire.
