Shanghai announced on June 8 the first batch of municipal non-substance cultural heritage list, in which the manufacturing craftwork of Shanghai style Cheong-sam (Chinese traditional dress) is listed among 83 items.
Shanghai Arts Institute and some old well-known clothing enterprises jointly made this declaration.
Experts say that the real tailoring of Cheong-sam requires customization by hand. The 'body measuring' alone would require the measurements of more than 30 parts of the body.
However, now, with the fashion mass production and the impact of the accelerated pace of life, the making skills of cheongsam is on brink of being lost.
Hence, it is a top priority not only to protect but also strengthen this exquisite manufacturing craftwork.
