Garment exporters seek preferential entry into US market

Nepali garment exporters have started lobbying to receive preferential entry into the US market, just before the visit of US Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian Affairs, Mr. Robert O'Blake.
A delegation from Garment Association of Nepal (GAN) led by its President Mr. Prashant Kumar Pokhrel requested the Foreign Minister Ms. Sujata Koirala in a meeting, to put this issue as a national agenda to Blake.
Ms. Koirala assured the GAN delegation that the issue would be discussed with the US Assistance Secretary of State. The Minister also urged by the delegation to motivate the diplomatic mission to get the bill passed by the US Senate.
GAN delegation informed the Minister about the recent initiatives of two US senators presenting a bill to give duty-free entry to apparels and textiles imported from Nepal.
In another meeting, with the Prime Minister's Foreign Advisor Mr. Rajan Bhattarai, GAN officials requested him to include this issue on the Prime Minister's Agenda during his meeting with Blake.
Mr. Bhattarai assured the inclusion of the said issue on the Prime Minister's agenda, informed GAN President, Mr. Pokhrel.
A bill, which would provide duty-free access to the textiles and apparels imported from 14 least Developed countries (LCDs) including Nepal, has been listed in US Senate by two US Senators.
