In order to avail the benefit of the $0.6 million fund projected to assist former garment workers in Saipan, about 1,000 former garment workers submitted applications to the Garment Workers Trust Fund till August 15, 2009, informed the Chairman of GWTF, Mr. Timothy Bellas.

To review these applications, a meeting will be held on September 25, 2009 among Mr. Bellas and co-trustees, former Washington State Supreme Court Chief Justice Richard Guy and former California Supreme Court Justice Cruz Reynoso.

The GWTF Chairman had mentioned in his last letter to the Gov. Beningo R. Fitial that they are going to consider government's request, but repatriation is their first priority, informed the Chairman.

The Governor recently asked the GWTF to reconsider the decision of not offering compensation to former garment workers who haven't been paid because the employer and the bonding company stopped business operations.

If making a charity donation is possible for the Trust Fund, then providing donation to each qualified worker is also possible, said Mr. Fitial. Distribution from the Trust Fund to each worker with genuine claims would possibly be the best way out, added Mr. Fitial.
