Sri Lanka's Minister of Export Development and International Trade, Prof. GL Peiris said that the country would not succumb to pressure to an international investigation within the country as a pre-requisite to obtain the much needed GSP Plus facility.

He said it was a matter of self-esteem for the country and the government is currently taking every possible effort within its framework to get the trade concession extended.

Under GSP Plus concession, Sri Lanka is able to export over 7,000 goods and products, duty free to the EU countries and it has helped the apparel export industry the most, in terms of employment generated and also to being the highest export revenue generator.

Not receiving the extension has become a matter of worry for the apparel sector since it directly employs more than 270,000 workers and provides indirect employment to many times more and most of these workers hail from rural areas.

The European Commission is scheduled to hold discussions on October 15 to reach a consensus on extending the GSP Plus facility to Sri Lanka, which expires at the end of the year, after it received this concession four years ago.
