Border town hub for garment export to India

Rangpur, a town in Bangladesh, located near the eastern borders of India has become a hub for garment exports to India, so much so that, the north-eastern states of India prefer to source clothing from here due to its proximity and take advantage of the South Asia Free Trade Area (Safta) agreement.

Garment traders based in Kolkatta and Silguri import trousers and shirts meant for mass consumption in the region from Rangpur, while some import women's dresses for re-export to other overseas countries.

The goods are shipped through the Burimari Land Port, 60 kilometres from Rangpur and Siliguri is only 100 kilometres from there. Siliguri buyers prefer Rangpur to other Indian states as it is cost-effective for them.

Garment workers who work in Dhaka, but hail from this region are shifting back to local factories, even though they get lower wages as they are able to live with their families.

But garment factories complain about erratic power supply in the area, due to which they face problems of completing orders on time and also face challenges in accessing bank credit.
