Philippine Information Agency (PIA) informed that all government employees are mandated to wear office uniforms made of Philippine Tropical Fabrics (PTF) from the fibers of abaca, banana, and pineapple, based on Republic Act 9242 issued last February 10, 2005.

This government mandate which is expected to take effect next year, is based on the premise that some 1.5 million government officials are receiving an average annual uniform allowance of P4,000.00.

According to the Philippine Textile Research Institute Director, Dr. Carlos C. Tomboc, in an interview conducted by the Philippine Information Agency, the law will help the government create livelihood opportunities for not less than 200-thousand Filipinos, considering that the weaving of raw materials up to the manufacturing of the textiles are done in the Philippines.

This principle, Dr. Tomboc further stated that they will not only benefit the native fabric industries, but also the Filipino farmers in terms of production of the raw materials, hence, a projected savings of P200 million on import substitution.

The technology of using the tropical fibers for uniforms was generated by the Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI) of the Department of Science and Technology, and is not only patronized in the Philippines, but also abroad.

As models, employees of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) are already using uniforms made of pineapple and abaca fibers blended with polyester, for almost a year now.
