Fiji's Textile, Clothing and Footwear (TCF) Council has welcomed the Government's decision to increase the minimum wage rate by ten percent.

The TCF has expressed happiness that the Government has considered the plight of the employees, but has called for a wage-setting formula.

The Council has said that double-digit wage increments are sustainable only if there is adequate productivity growth along with favourable export market conditions. Hence, future minimum wage increments should be finalized after taking these aspects into consideration.

The textile and clothing industry in Fiji has felt the impact of the recent natural disasters in Australia and New Zealand. Also, the domestic operational costs of the industries have increased due to enormous increase in fuel and electricity costs, the Council added.

In the past few months, nearly 150 new jobs have been created in the textile and clothing industry, according to TCF.
