Pakistani cabinet approves export of PPE, sanitisers

The Pakistani cabinet in a recent meeting chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan approved export of personal protective equipment (PPE) of both woven and non-woven material and sanitisers. However the ban on export of Tyvek suits, N95 masks and surgical masks will continue, adviser to the prime minister for commerce and investment Abdul Razak Dawood said.

Dawood urged exporters to capture a sound share of the world market for these items. A committee has been formed to manage domestic demand to ensure adequate supply. A notification for the purpose will be out in a few days, according to Pakistani media reports.

The meeting also decided that a committee comprising of members from ministries of commerce, health, industrial production and science and technology will be authorised to ban the export of any particular item keeping in view domestic needs.

Hundreds of units manufacturing garments, sports goods, textile, plastics and auto accessories are shifting towards manufacturing PPE, the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry said in a statement.

“We should not surrender this tremendous export opportunity to India, Cambodia and Bangladesh. There is a short window to capture market share,” said the statement.

The LCCI said the process of registration with the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan takes a long time and is a major obstacle in PPE manufacturing.
