Physical retailers change strategy to face online onslaught

Major Indian fashion retail store chains are trying to face onslaught of online retailers like Amazon and Flipkart by ramping up their own e-commerce websites and also offering discounts and deals to their shoppers in 2016, expected to continue also into 2017. However, gains made by retailers were under pressure due to the demonetisation drive.

“Reliance Industries which operates hundreds of apparel retailing outlets, while also managing several private labels as well as global garment brands, has also forayed into e-commerce with its fashion portal Ajio.com,” a news agency reported.

The current year also saw the entry of several international clothing brands like Simon Carter, Scotch & Soda, Ted Baker and Izabel London into the Indian market. (AR)
