Rally demands public vote on Brexit; May holds meeting
Thousands of people marched in London on March 23 calling for another European Union (EU) referendum. According to organisers of the ‘Put It To The People’ campaign, more than a million joined the march before rallying in front of the British Parliament. Protesters carrying EU flags and placards demanded any Brexit deal to be put to another public vote.

Lawmakers continued to look for a way out of the Brexit impasse as British Prime Minister Theresa May met senior colleagues and Brexit-supporting rebel lawmakers the next day at her country retreat to discuss her strategy and the possibility of putting her deal to another vote this week, according to a Downing Street spokesman, who reportedly refused to comment further on the talks.

European leaders agreed last week to delay the United Kingdom’s departure from the EU.

Speakers at the rally included Labour Party's deputy leader Tom Watson, Scotland's first minister Nicola Sturgeon, London mayor Sadiq Khan, independent MP Anna Soubry and former attorney general Dominic Grieve, British media reported.

Meanwhile, the Brexit secretary Stephen Barclay said an election will become more likely if MPs vote this week for a Brexit option the government does not want. He was among those who participated in the Sunday talks with May.

Some newspapers reports claimed cabinet ministers are plotting a coup against the prime minister, with an aim to replace her with a caretaker leader until a proper leadership contest is held later this year. (DS)
