DHL eCommerce, a division of the logistics company Deutsche Post DHL Group, has set up a new distribution centre in New Jersey to support customers with faster, more accurate processing of their consignments and additional capacity to support growth. The advanced automated distribution centre incorporates a range of new sorting and scanning technologies.

The 200,000 sq ft, advanced automated distribution centre is located in Avenel. New sorting and scanning technologies enable increased throughput and less manual processing of shipments. It can process up to 40,000 shipments per hour, 60 per cent more than an equivalent, non-automated facility.

“In this challenging market environment, with e-commerce merchants enjoying record shipment levels and the economy close to full employment, we are investing in more automation as the most effective way of enabling growth and improving service levels while ensuring our costs remain competitive,” said Lee Spratt, CEO, DHL eCommerce Americas. “Our new distribution centre in New Jersey is the most modern and efficient facility in the DHL eCommerce Americas network to date. It will help us to further support merchants grow their e-commerce businesses domestically as well as internationally, ensuring a high quality experience for their customers.”

The newly launched facility is equipped to boost productivity through the use of a new crossbelt conveyer sorting system and automated bar-code scanning functionality allowing for higher speed and more throughput.

The new distribution centre is located in close proximity to US Postal Service entry points, allowing faster connection to the national postal operator’s extensive final mile delivery network. The reduced reliance on manual processing will increase the speed and accuracy of sorting customer shipments, in addition to creating a safer working environment for the 200 employees that will work at the facility.

The new site brings the number of distribution centres in the DHL eCommerce US network to 19. DHL eCommerce also operates three fulfillment centres across the US providing a seamless integration with DHL eCommerce’s shipping capabilities to allow customers to meet their fulfillment and shipping requirements in a much more efficient fashion.
