Cotton industry struggles to survive

Vietnam's cotton productivity and high production cost have put cotton growing industry in a difficult situation.
These factors have lowered the competitiveness of this industry and challenged its survival in global market, informed executive of the Vietnam Cotton Company.
If the import of the US cotton starts in the country under the bilateral agreement, it will be very hard for the domestic players to survive with lower quality products.
Vietnam cotton growing areas are fragmented which cause lower productivity.
Country's cotton growing area is expected to fall from 30,000 hectares in 2004 to 20,000 hectares this year with output of 8,000 tons.
On the other hand country's cotton is only 5 percent cheaper than those of the imported with unmatched quality.
