Lack of potassium spoils Virginia cotton

02 Nov '06
1 min read

Cotton growers in Virginia have to face a tough year ahead as deficiency of potassium has resulted into premature defoliation shattering the dreams of bumper crop.

Agronomists state that the deficiency is caused by earlier cotton yields (more than 900 pound per acre yield in 2004 and 2005) and high boll load in 2006.

The two successful years of bulk crop in a row have deprived the land of nutrients including potassium.

The entire cotton-producing area has been affected by early spring rains, which hampered the root growth in planted cotton.
