Despite higher cotton yield incomes dip, says CRDC

Cotton Research and Development Corporation (CRDC) announced that the Interim 2005 Cotton Crop Comparative Analysis, which produces industry benchmarks for the economics of cotton growing in Australia, has been published by the Cotton Research and Development Corporation, the Cotton Catchment Communities CRC and BOYCE Chartered Accountants.
2005 is the fifth year that the analysis has taken place, and the interim report is based on the data from approximately 1/3 of the total usual participants. A full report will be published during 2006 and it is expected that the data will change as more people are added to the sample.
Interim findings from the analysis include:
- The average farm planted 733 hectares which is 235 more hectares than the previous year.
- The yield was up by 0.99 of a bale per hectare including areas affected by hail. If hail effected areas are taken out of the sample, the average yield increase is 1.4 bales per hectare.
- Income of $4,387 per hectare is down on the previous year by $182 per hectare.
- There has been a large reduction in insecticide costs of $288 per hectare with the contributing factors being the use of Bollgard II and much lower insect pressure experienced across most regions.
- Total costs are down by $838 per hectare but continue to remain around the $3,100 per hectare level.
The combination of the above has meant that the farm operating profit of $1,225 per hectare, increased by $656 on the prior year. However, the interest cost of $717 per hectare, while reduced by $204 on the prior year, is still a large percentage of the total costs.
