In October 2006, EU implemented 16.5 percent anti-dumping duty on Chinese shoes for a period of two years. However, with the period about to expire from next month, EU is again faced with the issue of whether or not to prolong this anti-dumping tax on Chinese shoes.
Of the 27 member countries of EU, 15 countries have expressed objection to imposing anti-dumping duties while France, Italy and some others have strongly supported its implementation.
On the other hand, the European Retailers Organization and the European Consumers Organization held that anti-dumping taxes were of no help to anyone since customers were paying high prices for both foodstuff and energy and the additional anti-dumping tax only adds to the already high prices which will ultimately have to be ultimately borne by consumers.
