The State Pollution Control Board had recently issued notices to all the 252 tanneries running in Kanpur, ordering them to abide by the rule of the Central Government to check the problem of pollution in 15 days. Failing to do so, they have to face the consequences.
Some time back, 80 tanneries from the city were served notices by the state board.
Initially, there were 402 tanneries running in the city, out of which 65 were shut down. Supply of electricity to these tanneries was cut down as these were polluting the Ganga river.
Another 60 tanneries have stopped operating because of the loss incurred by them, another 20 tanneries are involved in dry work. The remaining 252 tanneries have been served with notices.
