India's draft e-com policy wants equal, impartial treatment of sellers

E-commerce firms in India will be required to treat sellers equally on their platforms and ensure transparency, according to a draft policy. After brick-and-mortar retailers accused online giants of flouting regulations, the government has been deliberating a new e-commerce policy for months. The draft urges operators to be impartial in dealing with sellers.
“E-commerce operators must ensure equal treatment of all sellers/vendors registered on their platforms and not adopt algorithms which result in prioritizing select vendors/sellers,” a global newswire quoted the draft policy document as saying.
India is also considering changes to foreign investment rules that could prompt e-commerce players to restructure their ties with some major sellers.
Top government officials from various departments, including the commerce ministry, met on March 13 to discuss the e-commerce policy.
