Australian Wool Innovation Limited reported that the record-high snowfalls in Japan have enhanced sales of winter clothes and heaters, and demand for such products is expected to grow as the country-wide cold snap continues.
A senior employee of a major department store stated that with sales of expensive brand coats up significantly, department stores are competing to procure such products.
Sales of heavy winter clothes have been brisk at Takashimaya Co department store where apparel sales surged 2.9 percent from the previous year, while Isetan Co department store sales rose 2.8 percent.
Sales of winter products at Parco Co stores soared 5.9 percent in December from the previous year, and the department store operator is set to post record-high profits on a consolidated basis for the business year ending in February.
Sales in December of wool coats at outlets of supermarket chain operator Ito-Yokado Co more than doubled from a year earlier, and sales of men's winter underwear have also increased.
