Commenting on her research, the judges who included university academics and industry personnel from NEXT, Incorporate Wear, and M&S, said: “This was a thesis that tackled REACH, a difficult but highly relevant subject - one that has enormous implications for the textile and fashion supply chain.

“The breadth and depth of her research was outstanding and the quality of analysis and conclusions clear and very well presented. She is a very worthy winner.”

Laura is now working as a garment technologist for TDP Textiles Ltd in Leicestershire, one of the UK's largest suppliers of character clothing such as Scoobydoo and Postman Pat pyjamas to major stores including Tesco, Asda and Mothercare, where she completed an industrial placement as part of her degree at DMU.

Laura's win continues a great track record for DMU student success in the ASBCI Student Dissertation Awards. In 2008 Natalie Sanders, BSc Retail Buying, won with her dissertation Fashioning a Lower Carbon Future, and DMU also had runners up in 2007 and 2006 with dissertations on constructed textiles for sensory impaired children and multi-sensory ponchos for disabled children.

Della Swain, Course Leader for Fashion at DMU, said: “We are pleased to see important national retailers like New Look and M&S recognising the talent and creativity of our students work in the ASBCI competition. It is another fantastic success for DMU to have Garfield and Laura selected as winners.”
