British fashion chain French Connection Group is allowed to use the "FCUK" name on its watches and jewellery.

Earlier this week, the UK Trademark Registry ruled in favor of French Connection to retain its trademark rights and against an application from Dennis Woodman to declare the FCUK logo on accessories invalid.

Mr Woodman had filed the application in September last year, stating that the logo or name could be misinterpreted as a swear word and thus breached a law from 1994 that restricts the use of words that could be offensive to the public.

The trademark registry has rejected the application made by Mr Woodman keeping in view the great success and name of the brand over the world, and the proof that the acronym originated as an abbreviation of French Connection United Kingdom. It also mentioned that the brand's young target group was likely to regard the word play as a joke and less likely to be offended.

The London-based French Connection, which has scaled back the use of the FCUK logo because it had lost its appeal and recently issued its second profit warning on falling sales.
