Michigan University students to hit ramp on April 14

Central Michigan University (CMU) students are getting ready to take the runway for the Threads fashion show being held April 14 in McGuirk Arena at 7:30 p.m. Threads, which is considered one of the largest events on campus, is organized by students from the apparel merchandising and design department and will feature 36 collections from 39 designers.
Fraser senior and co-producer of the event Laura Czupinski said what sets this year's show apart from shows in the past is its time period theme.
“Designers have re-interpreted and modernized the decades,” Czupinski said. “The selected time periods range from Ancient Egypt to futuristic. Elements of the time periods, such as silhouette, color, materials, patterns and culture have been inspirations to the designers.”
Apparel merchandising and design faculty member Carol Beard sees the show as a way to give students real-world experience in the fashion world.
“It synthesizes important design skills, such as critical and creative thinking, that are relevant to future careers in the apparel industry,” Beard said.
Beard says a new award this year will give one lucky winner the opportunity to work with Project Runway contestant Jonathan Kayne.
“The winner of this award, sponsored by Jonathan, will get to design a dress with him,” Beard said. “That dress will be produced and sold across the country.”
For Czupinski, the thing she is most looking forward to would be the “organized chaos” that goes on the day of the event.
“I have worked with Threads for the past four years,” said Czupinski. “This is the day where all of the hard work that everyone has put forth pays off.”
Riverdale senior and co-producer Jason Gagnon says the new directions of the event, such as a new venue which hosts 1,000 guests, have made for one exciting event.
“The program, stage and overall show will be amazing this year,” Gagnon said. “I really hope everyone will come and check it out.”
