Growing trade relations between India and its neighbours from the South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation (Saarc) which include Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, particularly in the leather sector, is clearly evident.
Pakistan's leather industry has developed considerably and plans to double its current $1 billion exports by 2010.
Experts believe that Indian leather products can make their mark in the international market provided they are made from Pakistani leather.
Arshad Zahur, President, Noor Leather Garments Pvt Ltd, said Pakistan will be able to efficiently cater to India's demand.
Zahur also added that Pakistani leather will suit Indian industry perfectly.
Government officials of Pakistan have even offered to make fiscal changes to boost leather trade between the two countries.
Leather companies and government officials from Pakistan and Bangladesh participated at the recently concluded India International Leather Fair.
Global leather products buyers are seeking alternative sourcing avenues, and Saarc countries could work together to tap this opportunity for better.
