Watch maker Citizen to mass produce CMOS camera modules with auto focus function for cellular phones

The Citizen group began to implement a “group development strategy” in October 2004 as part of its group operations, and has completed a high-quality development setup. At the same time, it has, on a group-wide basis, selected themes for development and concentrated resources. The Group has been continuously developing new products and embarking upon new projects since that time.
The new product introduced here is the first outcome of such endeavors. The companies of the Citizen group bring together their diverse strengths in technology and marketing, and have combined forces to support the progress of this project.
Principal characteristics
A CMOS camera module with an auto focus function for cellular phones. The module uses a stepping motor based on wristwatch technology.
By using a stepping motor as the actuator of an auto focus camera electric power consumption has been reduced to about one-tenth that consumed by a conventional piezoelectric motor.
Use of the stepping motor has made direct drive by a digital signal processor (DSP) possible. The motor driver IC, considered necessary in the past, has become unnecessary, and further downsizing has become possible.
Use of a CMOS sensor has helped to achieve a drastic cost reduction over the CCD sensor.
The use of Citizen Electronics Co.'s unique collective process (*1) in the manufacture of this product has made it possiblr downsizing has become possible.
