New York hosts two simultaneous expos on Chinese fashion

Two concurrent exhibitions, celebrating the history as well as the growing importance of contemporary Chinese fashion in the international fashion industry, are being held at the Museum of Chinese in America, New York from April 26 to September 29, 2013.

The first exhibition titled ‘Front Row: Chinese American Designers’ explores the glorious rise of Chinese American designers in the New York fashion scene. Curated by designer Mary Ping, the event features some of the signature looks by 16 contemporary US-based designers, such as Anna Sui, Yeohlee Teng, Vera Wang, Vivienne Tam, Derek Lam, Phillip Lim and Jason Wu.

Other than the apparel display and videos from these extremely talented designers of Chinese origin, the expo also gives an insight into the growth of New York’s Chinatown and the evolution of Chinese manufacturers, tailors and seamstresses in the city’s garment district.

The second exhibition ‘Shanghai Glamour: New Women 1910s-40s’ takes visitors back to the early 20th century Shanghai. It narrates the story and changing roles of cosmopolitan Chinese women through styles reflecting various feminine archetypes, right from the femme fatale and educated woman to sophisticated high-society woman.

Curated by scholar Mei Mei Rado, the exhibits include 12 exclusive outfits, sourced from the China National Silk Museum in Hangzhou, from the 1910 to 1940 era and three dresses from prominent private American collectors.

The event also displays nearly 50 accessories, posters, lifestyle magazines and period images highlighting different dresses and styles sported by the 20th century Chinese women from different classes, such as students, socialites, courtesans, movie stars, artists, dancing girls and housewives.
