Masaba Gupta and Amit Agarwal open Lakme Fashion Week

The Indian fashion fest Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2014 opened with spectacular collections from two home-grown designers, Masaba Gupta and Amit Agarwal.

Saskia, the mysterious female character from American-born Paris-based novelist Roman Payne’s novel Wanderess, played as muse for young designer Gupta’s latest catwalk presentation. Inspired by the free-spirited women from Indian coastal state of Goa, the collection reflected a very vintage 1960’s feel based in an innovative palette of yellow and eye-catching neon hues alongside beige, white, brown and black.

Made using scuba fabrics, satin, jersey and crepe, the range included geometric style flower and leaf print loose-fit beach covers worn with white bikinis, sarees teamed with long sleeved leaf print blouses, flared minis, printed slinky gowns, thigh skimming jackets, flared pants, cut-out sari gowns, bell sleeve trapeze patterned tops, skirts with attached dupattas, bell bottom shararas, tail-coat cholis and drop waist maxis.

Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty, clad in a graceful printed black coloured gown with cut-outs and attached dupatta, walked as showstopper at Masaba’s show.

Delhi’s National Institute of Fashion Technology grad Amit Agarwal mixed elements of menswear and tribal looks in his new presentation. Replete with hints of androgyny and ultra-glam femininity, the curve hugging pieces were crafted from washed matte silks, crepe de chine, jersey, duchess satin and tulle fabrics.

Enhanced with shimmering metallic strips on a colour story of red, navy, jade, silver, bronze and rust, the range displayed plunge neck black gowns, fish tail jackets, moulded and pleated saree gowns with inflated balloon sleeves, peplums with lattice work and laser cut detailing, flared skirts and a dramatic black striped, draped fitted gown donned by Hindi film actress and Agarwal’s showstopper Sushmita Sen on the opening night.
