Musée Galliera celebrates 1950's French fashion trends

Around 100 fashion creations, retracing the evolution of female fashion trends from 1947 through 1957, have been put up on a display at the Parisian fashion museum Musée Galliera.

Titled as Les Années 50, La Mode en France 1947-1957 meaning The 50s Fashion in France 1947-1957, the exhibit features haute couture and ready-to wear as well as the iconic fashion trends and innovations from that decade.

Slated to run through November 2, 2014, the event showcases an array of evening wear, day wear and beachwear clothing and accessories from names like Christian Dior, Coco Chanel, Pierre Balmain and Critobel Balenciaga.

The exhibition’s most standout pieces include a Sailor Style Wool Dress from the French fashion creator Chanel’s S/S 1954 collection, a printed cotton poplin summer dress from Hermès’ S/S 1952 line, a 1953 one-piece swim suit by Neptunia, and a two piece high-waist bikini and a 1947 beach set from Jacques Heim.

Also the belted full-sleeve pink ‘Bonbon’ dress, the blue and silver embroidered and pleated, nipped in waist 1952 ‘Palmyre’ eveningwear, worn by the Duchess of Windsor, and few evening gowns (created between 1952 and 1955) from the house of Dior have formed a part of the exhibit.

In addition to the fashion creations, advertisements and behind-the-scenes footage of dress fittings, front covers of Paris Match and Elle magazines along with pictures of the famous fashion icons of the Fifties era Grace Kelly and Brigitte Bardot have also been included in the display.

The 1950s were a decisive period for French haute couture, which had suffered badly in the wake of the 1929 stock market crash and the war and was now reborn and made eternal. The list of names says it all: Jacques Heim, Chanel, Schiaparelli, Balenciaga, Jacques Fath making up the old guard; followed by newcomers Pierre Balmain, Christian Dior, Jacques Griffe, Hubert de Givenchy and Pierre Cardin. Paradoxically the dominance of French fashion hinged not only on the prestige of names that spelled luxury, elegance and originality, but also on the profession's willingness to make the revolutionary move into ready-to-wear. In 1954 the 'Couturiers Associés' – Jacques Fath, Robert Piguet, Paquin, Carven, Jean Dessès – founded the first haute couture ready-to-wear licensing company.
