As leading buyers of leather footwear and fashion products in the world, the US brands have begun eyeing Indian sources to cater to their needs.

Stating this to the media, Chairman of the Council for Leather Exports (CLE) M Rafeeque Ahmed informed that after a brief lull on the Indian markets, the scene is hotting up with leading US importers expressing keen interest in Indian leather fashion and footwear.

Leather, accessories and footwear exports touched $102 million mark, registering a 15 percent growth in 2004-05 over the previous year.

During 2003-04, exports stood at $89 million after an earlier three-year period of practically no growth.

In January-June period this year, India exported 5.21 million pairs of footwear recording a 35 percent rise in volume terms.

To promote and ensure US buyers come to India, the CLE is organising a meet with members of the American Apparel & Footwear Association that own leading US brands with Indian manufacturers, here next month.

As part of this, Indian leather and footwear exporters here will exhibit their products to the US delegation at Chennai and Delhi during October 16 to 23, 2005, Ahmed said.

The US delegation comprises leading brands like GBMI (Global Brand Marketing Inc), New Balance, Revolution Inc, Timberland Company and Wolverine.
