Leading Taiwanese footwear maker Apache Footwear has drawn plans to set up a footwear subsidiary production facility near Chennai.

Industry insiders revealed that the company is in talks with the State Government for setting up manufacturing facillity at Sriperumbudur, near Chennai at the cost of $60 million (approximately Rs 250 crore).

The company has plans to acquire 250 acres of land and is seeking Special Export Zone status for its.

Apache is famed for supplying sports shoes to multinational brand, Adidas.

This news has stirred the footwear industry and it is hoped that such ventures set a trend where Taiwan and China as footwear manufacturers plan to diversify production set manufacturing facilities in countries like India.

While European Union is carrying out anti-dumping investigations on footwear imports from China and Vietnam, it makes sense for Taiwanese and Chinese companies to move facilities in Asia, particulalrly to Bangladesh, India and Pakistan that can offer cheap labour and better infrastructure.
