"As long as 100 of us remain alive, we will never on any conditions be brought under English rule."
This 14th-century Declaration on the Arbroath appears on the Pringle T-shirt that led to the company being termed 'anti-English.'
Villain in the piece is none other than insidious quote that has English politicians, and general public wagging their tongues over it.
Maker of their famous diamond-patterned golf wear, Pringle is also known for their trendy designs lapped by hip and trendy young people.
Now when its new knitwear T-shirt got branded 'anti-English,' the company had all but to withdraw this particular £50 T-shirt, barely weeks before it went for sale.
A company spokesman reasoned that 'it is not appropriate for such an international company to use such a nationalist slogan.'
Besides, the company did not want to project as anti-English.
With criticism coming fast the company hit back saying: "The greatness of Pringle is rooted in history. Our heritage stands for Scotland."
For now the slogan with the T-shirt will find resting place off the shelves in the company warehouse, for sure!
