Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) opens for Textiles from the Garden of Eden during February 17-April 22, 2006.

The new exhibition will feature approximately 65 textiles with vibrant images of flowers and plants, reminiscent of the heavenly beauty found on earth.

A pleasurable feast for the eye, flowers may be identifiable, abstracted, stylized, familiar, exotic, or fanciful, while plants may recall tropical jungles or dense forests, sometimes in combination with birds or animals.

Lynn Felsher, exhibition curator and curator of textiles, The Museum at FIT stated that flowers and plants are among the most enduring and popular designs found on textiles. Perhaps this is because we view the Garden of Eden or earthly paradise as a metaphor for a perfect natural world in which humankind wishes to reside.

Textiles from the Garden of Eden will offer visitors a wide array of visual delights, creating a magical garden to enjoy.

The exhibition will include fabrics used in fashion or home furnishings from the mid-19th century to the present. It will be organized according to four themes: Garden Variety (popular flowers); Flower Power (oversize and abstract flowers); Forests (exotic and sylvan); and Grasses, Weeds, and Leaves.

Highlights of the exhibition will include a Wiener Werkstätte print with flowering plants on a geometric ground, circa 1925; Juin, a Paul Poiret furnishing fabric with naively painted roses, designed in 1929;Jezebel, a Jack Lenor Larsen screen printed velvet designed by Wendy Klein in 1971; and Sunflower, a photo-screen print collage designed by Gary Page for Red or Dead in 1964.
