Today on October 4, MOI became the first public University to own and administer a textile unit. Commonly known as the Rift Valley Textile (Rivatex) firm, the factory is expected to be inaugurated by President Kibaki.
MOI University took control of the textile firm after bidding it for a sum of Sh205 million and will make use of the factory for commercial dealings.
This textile plant had collapsed several years ago and its resurgence, will enhance the cotton industry in western Kenya, contribute to increasing the exports to the US and facilitate employment opportunities in the region.
Moreover, the University also plans to establish textile laboratories at the factory with the assistance of Flemish Inter-University Cooperation of Belgium. This endeavor will also make it a leading textile research center in Eastern and Central Africa.
