Chinese textiles and clothing shipped through Seattle expanded by 62.7 percent in the US and Europe, last year.

According to the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Textiles, Seattle-area ports handled more than 64,370 metric tons of Chinese-made textiles and apparel in the first 10 months of 2005.

This indicates a 139 percent surge compared to first 10 months of 2004, said an economic report.

Total $16.3 billion worth of Chinese clothing and textiles were shipped to the entire United States during the first 10 months of last year.

Herald Ugles, president of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 19 in Seattle said that rise in shipment is mainly due to more Chinese imports and redirected cargo from Southern California.

According to Joseph Borich, Executive Director of the Washington State China Relations Council, World Trade Organization agreement that ended global quotas on clothing and textiles caused this surge in shipment.
