Apparel industry in India could have achieved 25 to 30 percent export growth during the quota-free regime, while the export figures show that industry hardly reached 15 percent, lamented Pramal Udani, President of Clothing Manufacturers' Association of India (CMAI).
Lack of infrastructure and lassitude of government were quoted as the reasons for this sorry state.
In spite of having modernized units, the main barriers like poor economic and labour policies together with lower duty drawback rates regressed Indian apparel exports.
All industry wanted was amendments in the strict labour laws and rise in the duty drawback rates to at least 15 percent to compete with any product or country of the world.
