Name the hosiery and knitwear capital of India, and just one name pops up: Ludhiana!
Located in North Indian State of Punjab, Ludhiana aims high on knitwear and hosiery export fronts.
While demand for hosiery and knitwear products is growing from Europe, the USA and the East, Punjab's knitwear industry appears set to ride on the crest of demand.
But competition is clear as China and on lower scale, smaller Asian textile driven economies like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Mauritius among others, are fightng for the share of global textile export market that seems to shrink with the crublibng of the textile quotas, since January this year.
Industry insiders like Vinod Kumar Thapar, President, Knitwear Club, Ludhiana concur on the above say that India is way behind these countries from Asia, but add that extension of government support will boost Indian chances.
Upgradation, modernization, labor law reforms and optimal utilization of resources, apart from FDI investments and government support, will all help drive the Indian challange and power growth of the the textile industry, in general.
Stating that indentifying new market and allowing industry to flourish and branch out into woven fabrics and stitched garments like shirts and trousers, may ultimately prove to be major growth opportunities for Indian States like Punjab, with the elimination of WTO restrictions on exports opines SC Aggarwal, Principal Secretary, Industries Department, Punjab State Government.
