Foreign luxury brands plan to set up shop in India

The rush of luxury brands seems to suggest that India is the hot new destination for high priests of luxury from Paris, Milan to New York.

Whether it is Kenzo, Fendi, Ferragamo, Versace, Gucci or Valentino; everyone is making a beeline to India.

The French luxury goods conglomerate, LVMH with brands like Louis Vuitton, Tag Heuer and the recently launched in India, Christian Dior, is one of the few luxury groups with a substantial India presence due to its 100 multi-brand outlets across the country.

Swatch, with brands like Longines and Omega, and Richemont, with Piaget and Cartier, has also been around for some time now through their multi-brand outlets.

New entrants like Chanel India, which opened its only boutique in March 2005 in Delhi, plans to open a second exclusive store in Mumbai soon. The brand is present through Chanel counters, and intends increasing 10-12 more counters in Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore this year.

Dior, which recently opened its first store in New Delhi, is planning to open one at Mumbai.

The collections available at Chanel boutique besides leather bags, have fabric bags, a collection of small evening bags to compliment saris, said a Chanel India spokesperson.

While a Chanel nail-colour costs Rs 1,050, a leather bag goes up all the way to Rs 51,000. The Chanel boutique in New Delhi offers ready-to-wear fashion accessories, such as leather bags and shoes, eyewears, watches, fragrances and make-up products, as well as the precision skincare line.
