With her Aquascutum skirt suits, pussybow blouses and a fetish for striking hats, Baroness Margaret Thatcher will always be remembered by the fashion lovers as the world’s pioneer power dresser.

The sad demise of Britain’s first female Prime Minister at the age of 87 brings back the memories of Mrs. Thatcher’s rise in power and how it affected and evolved her prim and proper sense of dressing.

Christened as ‘Iron Lady’ by the Soviet army newspaper Red Star in 1976, the longest serving Prime Minister of Great Britain became a global style icon with her signature dressing style replete with no-fuss strictly professional bespoke attires and minimal sophisticated accessories, befitting her status.

With help from experts like her personal dresser Cynthia Crawford and dress advisor as well as director of the UK-based label Aquascutum, Margaret King, Mrs. Thatcher developed and established her own dressing style reflecting her confident powerful persona, which was later came to be recognized as the quintessential Thatcher look.

Making into the best-dressed list consecutively for three times (1988, 1989 and 1990), Mrs. Thatcher preferred wearing impeccably tailored wool, bouclé, hounds tooth and metallic brocade coats in jewel-tones as well as bold geometric or floral print mid-calf length silk dresses in green, cerise, fuchsia, purple, navy and monochromes.
