Japan's leading footwear companies, Mizuno Corp and Asics Corp are reinforcing the production of sports shoes in Vietnam to eventually cut down their dependency on China.

After the production launched at a partner factory in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), Mizuno is all set to produce 1 million pairs in Southeast Asian nation by the end of March 2008. Besides, it also aims to start one more partner factory in Vietnam by next year. What makes Vietnam more attractive as a production base is its improving infrastructure and relatively low labor costs.

Mizuno targets a sale of 15 million pairs by 2010 which is nearly 50 percent more than the estimated sale for the current year. Vietnam alone is expected to give an output of 30 percent of the projected sales which comes to nearly 4 million pairs.

Asics, on the other hand, has distributed the production of 6 million pairs to two of its partner factories in Vietnam.
