The index for gasoline rose in April. The energy index rose by 1.1 per cent over the month, the same increase as in March.
In contrast, the index for natural gas fell by 2.9 per cent in April, and the index for electricity decreased by 0.1 per cent over the month.
The energy index increased 2.6 per cent over the past 12 months.
The index for all items less food and energy rose by 0.3 per cent in April, after rising by 0.4 per cent in each of the three preceding months. The apparel index increased in April, while that of household furnishings decreased, a BLS release said.
The all items index rose by 3.4 per cent for the 12 months ending April—a smaller increase than the 3.5-per cent increase for the 12 months ending March.
The all items less food and energy index rose by 3.6 per cent over the last 12 months. The energy index increased by 2.6 per cent for the 12 months ending April.
