The European Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka (ECCSL), in conjunction with the Joint Apparel Association Forum (JAAF) successfully concluded the 'Productivity improvement and cost reduction in the SME apparel manufacturing sector; to increase opportunities for European investment partners or export' programme, with the selection of five champion companies.

While the selection of five champion companies was part of the project objectives, the champion companies were required to display their achievements to the rest of the industry.

In addition, the selection of the champions from the SME sector demonstrated to the industry what improvements can be made. The display of achievements allowed other SMEs to learn from the champions' experience.

The five champion companies are Continental Fashions Pvt Ltd, Jinadasa Brothers (Garments) Ltd, Orit Apparels Lanka Pvt Ltd, Superior Knitwear Co Ltd, and Tarakie Garments Pvt Ltd. These companies demonstrated commitment, innovativeness and continuous improvement during the programme.

The selection was challenging as all the 29 companies in the programme have shown considerable improvement since the commencement of the project.

Bernard Botejue Industries, another participant company of the ECCSL SME apparel manufacturing programme, was recognised as the 'Best Performing Supplier Award' by the U.K.'s fastest growing supermarket chain in the clothing sector.

The award was won against competition from clothing manufacturers and suppliers from China, India, Bangladesh, and Turkey.

At the final workshop held on 19th December 2006 at the Ceylon Continental Hotel, the Champion Companies displayed their achievements to the rest of the participants as well as the special invitees from the industry that were present.

The Lead Consultant of the project, Mr John Haycock identified commitment, willingness to learn, perseverance, and being prepared to get the basics right as the key elements, which constitute a champion from the rest.

The 22-month project is co-funded by the European Commission under its Asia-Invest programme. The team of resource personnel comprised with Mr John Haycock, an Irish Consultant leading the project, Mr Gihan Talgodapitiya, Mr Keerthi Abeywickrama of SewEasy and Mr Amal Fernando, while Mr Gamini Hathiringe is an Independent Evaluator.
