3rd International Cotton Conference at Tashkent concludes successfully

the third international cotton conference in tashkent during may 24 & 25, 2005 was a great success. the conference attracted more than 200 international participants from over 30 countries and nearly 400 participants in total.

the purposes of the conference were to exchange information, showcase opportunities for investment and to facilitate increases in cotton trade through expanded interaction.

the conference was organized by the agency for foreign economic relations of the government of uzbekistan and the international cotton advisory committee (icac), in cooperation with cotton outlook and the international textile manufacturers federation.

during the conference, uzbek officials announced that international investors in textile enterprises will be allowed to purchase cotton at a discount and will be exempt from certain taxes for periods of three, five or seven years. the specific exemptions were explained.

the activities of the asian development bank and the world bank in central asia were described, and the conference received a report about matters affecting cotton in the world trade organization. the benefits of trading cotton under standardized international trading rules with established arbitral procedures were discussed.

important papers were presented on the measurement of cotton prices, on the outlook for cotton prices in 2005/06, on the prospects for trade growth in central asia and the impacts of china on the world cotton market. there were recommendations for improved competitiveness of cotton and a discussion of the challenges facing the cotton sector of central asia.
