British lawmakers reject Brexit deal for 3rd time

British parliamentarians rejected Prime Minister Theresa May's European Union (EU) divorce deal for a third time on March 29, paving the way for a prolonged delay to Brexit or a chaotic ‘no deal’ withdrawal on April 12. May now has to explain her course of action for the near future after EU Council President Donald Tusk convened a Brussels summit on April 10.

The United Kingdom was due to leave the EU on March 29.

May cautioned that if the deal failed, then any further delay to Brexit would probably be a long one beyond April 12. “The legal default now is that the United Kingdom is due to leave the European Union on 12th April,” she said.

After May’s withdrawal agreement was defeated by 344 votes to 286, her political spokesman said the smaller margin of defeat showed things are moving in the right direction and that a number of senior members of the Conservative Party had voted in favour of the government.

May will press on with talks to secure support for her Brexit deal, global newswires quoted her spokesman as saying.
