China will increase cooperation with the five countries adjacent to the Mekong Basin in Southeast Asia in textile and apparel, according to the China National Textile and Apparel Council (CNTAC). More efforts will be made to strengthen trade and investment interaction and improve cooperation mechanisms and deepen the integration of industrial chains.

Since the establishment of the Lancang-Mekong cooperation mechanism, the import and export trade of textiles and apparel between China and the five Mekong countries—Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam—has seen steady growth with expanding scale of investment, said Xu Yingxin, the council's vice president.

In 2018, China saw its import and export trade volume of textiles and apparel with the five Mekong countries reach $29.79 billion, accounting for 9.6 per cent of China's total import and export volume of the sector, according to a news agency report.

In the future, cooperation between China and the Mekong countries will be more diversified, with expansion and enhancement in high-end areas, said Xu.

At the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Textile and Apparel Summit held in east China's Suzhou city recently, a textile and garment industry dialogue mechanism was officially launched to promote cooperation.
