The government of India’s north-eastern state Assam recently opened a silk yarn bank for weavers at Sualkuchi village that will stock thread varieties. Inaugurated by state chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal last week, the bank will provide subsidised mulberry yarn to weavers, according to Mukul Deka of Assam Apex Weavers & Artisans Cooperatve Federation Ltd. (ARTFED).
ARTFED functions under the state’s handlooms, textile and sericulture department.
