Indian panel to help double production, quadruple handloom export

The Indian government recently constituted a committee headed by Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI) chairman Sunil Sethi to suggest a road map, strategy and policy framework to double the production and quadruple export of handlooms in three years as announced on the National Handloom Day on August 7.
It will also suggest ways to improve domestic marketing, the quality of handloom products and input supplies, and to help handloom weavers agencies collaborate with designers, buying houses, institutions, organisations and exporters.
The committee will submit its preliminary recommendations within 30 days and its final report within 45 days from the day of its constitution, an official release said.
The committee members include Sudha Dhingra, professor at the national Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), New Delhi; Pune-based freelance writer Shefali Vaidya; Anagha Gaisas, owner of Saudamini Handlooms in Pune; Delhi-based fashion designer Suket Dhir; Sunil Alagh, managing director of SKA Advisors Pvt. Ltd. and former chief executive officer of Britannia Industries Ltd.; KN Prabhu of Karur-based Paradigm International; and Hetal R Mehta, chairman, Science Engineering & Technological Upliftment Foundation (SETU), Surat.
