The number of main jobs increased by 69,600 (or 0.5 per cent), while the number of multiple job holders increased by 2.1 per cent. Secondary jobs increased by 3.5 per cent to 1.1 million.
The proportion of vacant jobs remained at 2.8 per cent and the number of multiple job-holders increased by 2.1 per cent to 947,000 during the quarter.
Hours worked increased by 0.5 per cent to 5.7 billion hours. The number of private sector jobs increased by 0.5 per cent.
The proportion of secondary jobs to filled jobs increased to 7 per cent during the first quarter, an ABS release said.
The total number of employed people increased by 0.8 per cent to 14.2 million during the quarter, and the number of unemployed rose by 11,200 to 512,600.
Retail trade was among the three industries with the highest number of employed in the first quarter.
