Afghan President Ashraf Ghani recently inaugurated a $7-million cotton-processing plant in an industrial park in Herat province. The plant, called Afghan White Gold Cotton Industry, is among 30 new factories that have come up in the park. At present, it is procuring 20 tonnes of cotton from local growers daily with an output of 6 tonnes.

The plant opened on Afghanistan’s 98th independence day on August 19, according to Afghan media reports.

A special police unit was needed for the industrial park’s security to encourage further investment, Herat governor Mohammad Asif Rahimi told the president.

“Our primary goal is to make Herat our future development and transit hub. Herat City will link Iran, China and Central Asian states…A railroad will be inaugurated within weeks, with cement transportation in focus,” said Ghani.

The government will oversee the unsatisfactory performance of Islam Qala, Zaranj, Aqina and Hairatan ports till these were reformed, he added. (DS)
