Local trends were in spotlight at the first Indonesia Fashion Week (IFW) that saw over 400 fashion brands and 200 designers displaying their newest collections.

The trade event, which was organized by the Indonesia Fashion Designers Association (Appmi) with active support from six Government ministries, featured ready-to-wear apparels and accessories created by small and medium enterprises and Indonesian designers.

Most of the collections at the event featured batik and tenun, the traditional handwoven textiles. These were showcased through seven different concept zones, viz. wedding attire, kidswear, Muslim wear, ready-to-wear medium class, ready-to-wear deluxe, textiles and accessories.

A rich variety of shawls and scarves made of lotis, a traditional handwoven textile from the province of East Nusa Tenggara, was displayed by Hue Biabi, a group consisting of weavers and housewives from Anin village of East Nusa Tenggara. Lotis is in high demand for its complex floral and animal designs in vibrant hues.

Another highlight at IFW 2012 was a series of fashion shows. Stella Rissa, a 25-year-old designer, presented her latest collection “Inner”, for her label Stellarissa. The collection included semi-transparent trousers paired with a wide-shouldered, long black jacket.

Auguste Soesastro, the 29-year-old fashion designer whose Kraton collection attracted attention in New York in 2009, presented his second collection called Kromo. The new line featured daily office wear and classic evening gowns in basic colours, which retained Auguste's signature style.

Contour Fluidity was name of a spring and summer collection displayed by New York-based Indonesian fashion designer Ardistia Dwiasri. The collection had structured dresses, layered jackets, jumpsuits and body-wrapping blouses in creamy shades.

Well-known designer Carmanita displayed her collection Cross Culture, which was made in collaboration with Japanese tie-dye artisans and Indian weavers. There were batik designs on Japanese shibori and Indian sarees.

Mardiana Ika, Hong-Kong based Indonesian fashion designer, in her collection Beauty and the Beast, displayed skirts, structured jackets and blouses made of leather and brocade in various black and white hues. Classic embroideries, piping and crochet added richness to her collection.

Orientalism, the collection showcased by Ghea Sukarya Panggabean, featured kebaya-inspired cocktail dresses. These dresses had colorful Chinese embroidered dragons, butterflies and birds.
